How do I know if my vagina looks “normal”? Do I need to undergo this procedure?
In most women, normal genitalia will appear with these characteristics:
- The labia minora, or inner lips, will be fully tucked in to the or labia majora, or outer lips; any protruding is minimal
- The inner lips are fairly symmetric in size and length
- The mons pubis, or area where pubic hair is found above the vagina, and outer lips should be somewhat full and cover the vulva’s opening slit
- The outer lips will be slightly plump with firm skin and very little wrinkling
Do I need to undergo this procedure?
The majority of Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s patients seek to improve the symmetry and reduce the overall size and length of the inner lips.
When the outer lips are a patient’s concern, fat grafting can create or restore a plump appearance to the vaginas exterior, and can reduce or eliminate wrinkles in the skin. Many patients can benefit from a treatment plan that includes non-invasive procedures like radiofrequency laser and medical-grade skin care treatments to improve the look of vaginal and surrounding skin.
Is the procedure performed at Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s practice?
To ensure patient comfort and safety, plastic surgery procedures are performed in the doctor’s outpatient surgery suite. Accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAASF), the facility meets the highest level of standard in care in the United States.
Will I need to be fully sedated under general anesthesia?
During most of Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s procedures, general anesthesia is not necessary. Labiaplasty, if performed as a single surgery, can be performed under local anesthesia.
When labiaplasty is coupled with labia majora fat grafting, a board-certified anesthesiologist will provide the necessary medications and monitoring for general anesthesia.
What should I expect of the recovery process?
Patients will be prescribed narcotic pain medications that they can take for the first 24-48 hours following the surgery. In addition to pain management, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will prescribe prophylactic antibiotics to help stave off infection. Patients who are prone to vaginal infections during an antibiotics course will also be prescribed an anti-fungal medication.
Vaginal rejuvenation patients will notice swelling in the first postoperative 72 hours, which can be controlled with periodic icing. This can limit the inflammatory response and aid with any pain or discomfort.
If bruising occurs, it is expected to diminish in the next 7-10 days.
Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz recommends limited movement for the first few days. Patients can expect to miss about 5-7 days of work.
While more vigorous exercise like running and cycling should be avoided for about 4 weeks, light exercise is generally approved 2 weeks after surgery.
Vaginal rejuvenation patients must abstain from sex for 40 days if they underwent labiaplasty, or surgery to the inner lips. If the patient underwent labia majora, or outer lip, enhancement performed through fat grafting, most patients are cleared for sex after 2 weeks.
How do I care for the area after surgery?
Following a vaginal surgery, the genitals must remain clean. After using the bathroom, patients can use a spray bottle to improve post-surgical hygiene.
Patients should avoid getting up and moving around for about three days, which helps minimize area swelling.
The surgery area can be iced for 20 minutes each hour, but patients are cautioned to be mindful of the time and to remain awake during this process to avoid a “cold burn” to this sensitive area.
Patients can shower 24 hours after their surgery, but cannot submerge the area in a bath until it has fully healed.
Visiting a pool or beach is not permitted for at least 4 weeks after the procedure.
Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz uses dissolvable stitches at his practice, but if they have not fully absorbed, the can be removed at the office after 3 weeks.
When am I able to have sex?
Following labiaplasty, patients must avoid sexual intercourse for 40 days, a timeframe which may be prolonged if other procedures were performed during the surgery. Those who undergo only a fat transfer to the outer lips can have sex again at the 2 week mark.
Can a procedure be combined with another plastic surgery procedure?
Labiaplasty can be performed on its own, or as part of other procedures during vaginal rejuvenation. It is also popular to undergo labiaplasty as part of a mommy makeover, which is when a number of features are restored to their pre-childbirth state, including the breasts, abdomen, and vagina.
A plastic surgery procedure can be combined with another if the total time under anesthesia is under 5 hours.
