Rejuvenation of the female genitalia is one of the fastest growing areas in plastic surgery. Ever since nudity became more apparent and accepted in the media, women began to notice changes and compare themselves with other women in ways they had never thought to do before.
The problems more commonly encountered in the external genitalia are protrusion of the inner lips (labia minora) past the outer lips (labia majora), enlargement of the clitoral hooding, and /or volume loss (fat loss) of the outer lips (labia majora) and the mons pubis.
Most patients consult without and persistent physical symptoms and are mostly bothered by the aesthetic appearance of their external genitalia. Some patients experience problems with tight clothing, such as swimwear or athletic attire, others are bothered during exercising from significant friction in the area, and a small percentage of them report being self-conscious during sexual intercourse.
Several surgical techniques have been developed to rejuvenate and create more symmetry to the female external genitalia. The goals of these techniques to rejuvenate the female genitalia will not guarantee further enhancement of sexual intercourse. The external appearance of the area is not related to arousal during sex. However, some women report an enhanced sexual life because they are no longer embarrassed to be exposed and engage in sexual intercourse.
